Analysis of an Advertisement

Thank you Mom by Proctor and Gamble

After watching this advertisement each and every person would have to take a minute and dry their eyes. This was because no one would ever believe that an advertisement that was made to sell cleaning and household products would pull at the heartstrings of individuals in such a way (Youtube.com, 2019). However, Proctor and Gamble has been at the top of their game and have delivered the best ads that have ever been witnessed by the people in the industry related to consumer goods. This advertisement is the prime example of their magnificence of attracting people through their common held beliefs.

Proctor and Gamble in this advertisement had identified the endearing story of the mothers behind those world class Olympic athletes. Their mothers who had done everything in their power to push their children to do great things in life which they finally reached (Youtube.com, 2019). This advertisement showed the honesty and purity of a mothers love. How they work each and every minute of their lives for the betterment of their children. Furthermore, it showed that coupled with their hard work it was their mothers that made these athletes who they are today.

The lesson in this advertisement is that with every advertisement the season or the period of time is important. Secondly, even if an ad is run at the time of a very prestigious or world class event be sure to make the message within ad has longevity. This message should be able to influence the minds of the people who have seen it and who will see it in the future (Youtube.com, 2019). In this manner marketing involving emotions and nostalgia are powerful tools that can influence the minds of the consumer and effect their buying behavior. So if there is a bigger story or a story that is connects people universally than the advertisement for the product should focus on it and should showcase it as much as possible.

The Lion King

As a child, I have watched and enjoyed the Lion King animated movie. It was a fascinating experience to watch my hero grow and rise as a leader. Mufasa, the king, who is the father of the lead of the movie, Simba, was a very phenomenal and kind-hearted leader. But if I see the movie now, I see many other things that I did not notice when I have watched the movie as a kid.

If we ignore the murderous part of the villain Scar, the movie would not have been a success. As an adult, we can wait for something we like for as long as we want. What if, somehow, we are replaced by someone that is perhaps younger and have no experience, our reaction would have been the same apart from the murderous part which cannot be justified. For me, the character Scar in the movie represents the part of the life which does not go always according to the plan, despite having them planned in our mind according to our wish. The villain is, in my opinion, is the most real character in the whole movie.

Secondly, as a child when I was seeing the movie, the part where Timon and Pumba are treated as outsiders of the animal society really depressed me. We can all relate this thing from one or another point in our lives. Sometimes we feel that we are not fit in the strange world and that no one can understand us. When both of them sing the Hakuna Matata, Simba was welcomed by them which is a good message in the movie. We all misunderstand and make mistakes in our lives, but can learn from the mistakes that we commit. Surrounding ourselves with people that are amiable and good-natured tend to make our life peaceful. For me, this has proved to be life-changing.

“Formation” the music video by Beyonce is the most celebrated song that calls for unity among black women facing racial discrimination. The video has amalgamated the story of Beyonce navigating through the hostile environment facing racial discrimination, with a Malcolm X voiceover expression. It is the part of political representation that has been portrayed by Childish Gambino in his music video “This is America”. It evokes the church massacre of Charleston.

Analysis of media frames and race

Introduction

Amina Al-Khatatbeh’s “Muslim Girl” and Holtzman’s and Sharpe’s “Theories and Constructs of Race” exhibits role of media in framing social issues of race and immigration. The arguments drawn by authors of both sources stresses on the media’s involvement in portraying events that influence perceptions of society. Holtzman and Sparpe have explained media framing Amina’s article is focused on discussing how representation of Muslims in media impact thoughts of people. Media encourage audience to look through the gender, race and class as constructed under the influence of historical and cultural perspectives. Thesis statement: Race and religion are constructed by media that control perceptions of the society.

Body

According to Al-Khatatbeh media portray Muslims as terrorists and violent that could harm Americans. The media has been playing negative role by criticizing the traditional values and cultural norms such as Muslim women with veils. This has resulted in more challenging situation for the Muslim women.

Textual evidence:

The author mentions, “things are only getting worse and especially for a Muslim woman, a veiled Muslim woman, one of the most visible religious minorities in the country” (Al-Khatatbeh 4).

Symbolism

The textual evidence suggests prevalence of negative stereotypes due to inappropriate role of media. Veil is used for associating Muslim women with their intentions of engaging in criminal activities. Veil is used for symbolizing disloyalty, terrorism and aggression.

Relation to thesis

The evidence is linked to the themes because it proves the role of media in negative portrayal of Muslim women.

Misrepresentation through media is linked to negative treatment of non-Muslims towards Muslims. The way media treat minorities like Muslims influence Americans to treat them in the same way.

Textual evidence

“Racial discrimination is an action or behavior that may result from conscious or unconscious beliefs (stereotypes) about a racial group or from predetermined feelings (prejudices) toward that group” (Holtzman & Sharpe 601).

Symbolism

The text uses the term unconscious beliefs that reflects the perceptions promoted by media about Muslims. Negative portrayal of Muslims become part of individual thoughts and they exhibit similar attitudes towards them during their encounter.

Relation to thesis

The evidence is linked to the thesis because it highlights the unconscious perceptions of people towards Muslims is the result of media’s overemphasis on negative aspects and historical events.

Article # 1 (cite evidence)

The author states, “we’ve seen a steady increase in hate crimes against Muslim women, unfortunately since he who shall not be named [Donald Trump] was elected” (Al-Khatatbeh 4).

Significance/ symbolism

The text has significance because it attempts to explain the reason behind rising crimes against Muslim women. The author has argued that the criticism of President Trump against Muslims, portrayed by media encouraged American citizens to show discrimination.

Relationship to thesis

The evidence is related to the thesis because it highlights the deteriorating impacts of media portrayal of Muslims as terrorist. The Negative representation of Muslims promote hatred and distrust among American population that can threaten the lives of people belonging to minority populations.

Article # 1 (cite evidence)

The authors states, inferior” people are subjected to violence, torture, murder, and destruction of property, which are seen as justified by white supremacist individuals (Holtzman & Sharpe 601).

Significance/ symbolism

The evidence has significant because it exhibits how damaging media could be for the minority populations. Media has always associated minority population with hate crimes such as murder, property damage and rape that gives a justification to whites for adopting bad treatment towards them.

Relationship to thesis

The evidence is linked to the thesis because it illustrates the existing practices of connecting minority populations with hate crimes. Such beliefs are promoted by media and influence mindset of white population.

Conclusion

The argument claims that the perceptions of society towards minority population are controlled by media due to its portrayal of race and religion. Al-Khatatbeh has identified media as a dominant agency in promoting hatred and discrimination against Muslim women. Holtzman and Sharpe have also identified the powerful role of media in imposing certain thoughts and perceptions such as by associating crimes with minority population.

Analysis of Tough Guise 2

Gender discrimination has always been a hot topic among the masses. It has become a great social issue currently and a lot of work is being done on it in different fields. One of the most prominent and notable areas in this respect is the field of media. Media plays a very vital role in the representation of different genders in society and enforcing the perception related to these genders among the masses, especially the young generation. One of the worth-mentioning efforts in this respect is the American documentary film “Miss Representation” by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The film came out in 2011 and discusses the struggles women have to go through on a daily basis (Newsom).

The documentary film excellently discusses how females are presented in the media industry and how this representation shapes up the perception of people in society regarding different gender roles and duties. The producer and director of the documentary Jennifer Siebel Newsom intricately points out that how the female characters have been shown as beautiful objects on the screen and how this is developing only a perception of females as an object over a period of time.

The documentary film gives serious lessons and points to ponder how our media industry is representing a major segment of society and how this representation is leaving an impact all over the society. Females have always been facing a discriminatory behavior and have been portrayed as beautifully decorated objects of beautification or sex. The producer has herself presented the solution to this issue in the documentary that the film makers should focus more on assigning protaginistic and more meaningful roles to the female actors so that they can also be viewed as powerful and strong creatures. Media should throw more light on the achievemnts of females instead of showing them as Barbie dolls. Works Cited

Analysis of short Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield

The tale begins on a bright Sunday morning in Paris as Miss Brill gets ready for her weekly sunbathing at the park. Miss Brill is an aging English teacher who was preoccupied with things around her and therefore, people thought she was crazy though she was not. In the short story, it is noted that she packs her furs and sit pretty alone talking to herself. Therefore, the center of theme revolves around Miss Brill, how she escaped from loneliness and endures herself to the real world.

In the story, it is noted that Miss Brill packed her furs and leave to the pack every day. This symbolizes how deep she was lonely in the world and the best way to engage her was to visit the pack where she could seek social contact CITATION Kat23 \p 372 \l 1033 (Mansfield 372). However, the pack represents life, and when she was at the pack she meets people of different age and tells different stories. This means that Miss Brill like interacting with people and the fact that she has been indoors made her behavior crazily although her observations make her look not crazy.

It is evident that Miss Brill has been in kind of “storage” a very lonely woman for better part of her life and therefore, a journey to the pack is what brings back life into her CITATION Kat23 \p 374 \l 1033 (Mansfield 374). Yet, it is clear that loneliness is truly not visible to her and she seems to love the trip to the park because it makes her feel in power and connect with what is going on around her. At the park, Miss Brill love listening to various strange conversations and she does not have anyone whom she can have a real conversation together. This, therefore, affects her and could be the genesis of her crazily behavior. At the park, Miss Brill does not sit on any seat. She sits on the special certain seat on the hand and therefore, this indicates how going to the park has become a ritual for her. It also shows how she views herself as a special and this might have been reasons she has been off from the rest of the world.

On the other end, Miss Brill is very curious about everything going on at the park. She tends to get into the lives of other people and judge people based on what she hears. She pays close attention to the world around and therefore, she realized there is a distinction between people in the stand show and in the field. She noted that the people on the field are lively and those on the stand are meek and lonely CITATION Kat23 \p 375 \l 1033 (Mansfield 375). It is evident that she makes such an observation about people because she cannot make an observation about her because she truly belongs in the group of people in the stand. But it is surprising that she sees herself different from people who are seated on the stand. It is, therefore, evident that she differentiates herself from the old. It means that she does not accept the age factor, which has caught up with her.

In conclusion, Miss Brill illustrates the life and perception of Miss Brill regarding life and the world around her. It clearly represented by the theme of loneliness and crazy to describe the position and condition of Miss Brill in her old age. Throughout the story, it is evident that Miss Bill had a different perspective on people. And she feels deeply that she is special and young while in real sense she has attained the old age as well. This illustrates how Miss Brill spends the rest of life feeling out of touch with the reality of the world of today.

Analysis of William Faulkner

Introduction:

William Faulkner is one of the most famous American writers and also the winner of Noble Prize. William Faulkner is the creator of many short stories, poems, essays, screenplays, and novels, but he is most famous for his short stories and novels, that he wrote in Mississippi. There are numbers of famous short stories that he wrote but Dry September and That Evening Sun are most appealing ones. His work was mainly published during 1920s and 1930s. Themes on which William Faulkner has mainly wrote are Southern traditions, community life, inequality, love for land, racial discrimination and injustice (Child,et,al,2018). He is one of the most versatile writers of his time as he was never taken into consideration by the opposition, who used to criticize him for writing in favor of the Black Americans. Faulkner is also famous for exploring the new areas, new experiences and most importantly he is best-known for coping new technical challenges in literature for which he is admired the most.

Discussion:

The short story Dry September is written by William Faulkner, in which he has discussed about a lady named Minnie Cooper, who was alone and unhappy and she spread rumors that a Black man named Will Mayes has attacked and raped her. One the main thing that could be seen in this short story is that this story happened in a rural area of South where discrimination between Black and White was at its peak. William than in this story introduced a character named John McLendon who gathered other people and decided to kill Will Mayes and ultimately they regret upon their act of killing innocent Will Mayes. They also regret, why they did not bother to investigate the truth. In this short story, it could be seen that William Faulkner, spots a light on the attitude and behavior of people living in that time and society when he wrote this story. William has highlighted many themes in this story such as the theme of rumor and theme of power of violence but the main themes on which he torched a light, for criticizing the society are justice, judgment, race, society, and class.

By taking a look at this short story, it could be observed that William Faulkner was a very courageous writer who was willing to spot the evils of his society even when he has to go against rest of the society. In this story, William has tried to highlight oppression, reluctant and heated passion that Black people used to face for decades. William is criticizing the White Americans of that time who apparently achieved a sophisticated and significant level of civilization but in a real sense they were still behaving like the caveman who was uncivilized and does not know how to treat his human fellows despite taking into account caste and color, he belongs.

In this story, William has endowed many animal traits with the human. Looking at the setting of this story, it could be said that William has tried to spot a light on the conflict that was there between the Black and White Americans after the World War I (Mills,et,al,2018). Another thing that could be seen in this story is that there is no need to cry over spilt milk as all the people who killed Will especially John McLendon regretted that they have killed innocent man. William through this story has indicated, a time when Black Americans were being targeted and there was no one to question why Black Americans were being discriminated and killed. The killing of Black Americans was not a matter of consideration in that time and particularly in South America, where Black Americans were living in terror and fear.

It could be seen that William is reflecting the thoughts of White people of that time who were considering Blacks as animals and deprived them of basic human rights. After studying William, it could be analyzed that racial discrimination has been one of the main issues of American since long and Black people were treated as servants by the White Americans. Williams also criticized the blindness of White Americans as they used to call themselves the most civilized nation and society but they were so ill-mannered that they even forgot how to treat humans.

That Evening Sun is another famous short story by William Faulkner in which he has portrayed a character named Quentin Compson, who is a twenty-four years old man and recalls the changes that he has observed in his town Jefferson, Mississippi during the last fifteen years. The narrator is pointing towards the changes that he noticed since he was a child and says that time has changed many things. Quentin pointed towards the modernization of the South Americans by saying that in the past Black Americans used to do laundry but in present, city laundry has taken the place of “Negro women”. By taking a look at the story and noting the words “bloated and bloodless” that Quentin used in this story, it could be said that the changes that he witnessed are negative and wished to have the old days and ways of life in South again (Snead,et,al,2017). By analyzing this story, it could be said that Quentin though admired the skills of Black women for carrying the laundry; still, he considered them as second citizens.

The main character Quentin even admitted the fact that the Black Americans have improved their lives but still, he pointed towards the time when the Blacks used to have very few rights. The industry of laundry that used to be run by the Black people is of great significance as it shows that they are still suffering from the harsh and threatening consequences of slavery even after decades of the abolition of slavery. Carrying of laundry was viewed as a game by the White children on the other hand; it was a work of great physical labor for the Black Americans. By taking a look at another character of the story, named Nancy, violence against the Blacks could be witnessed easily. William Faulkner has intentionally portrayed Nancy’s face in such a way that the people could clearly see violence against the Black people. Missing teeth of Nancy depicted that she was victim of physical violence. In this short story, William has mainly used themes of fear, innocence, and inequality.

This story was written in 1900s and it could be seen that at that time Black Americans were struggling to raise their standard of life, but their achievements were not much appreciated by the White people as it could be seen that the main character Quentin also goes back to the past when the Blacks were the only servants, though still there are many Black servants. William Faulkner explored various kinds of fear that Black people have as they were living in old South, where the violation of Black’s rights was at peak that could be seen in the character of Nancy. Another major thing that has been analyzed in this story is that there was a tension between White and Black that caused fear to permeate throughout the town. From the setting that has been mentioned in this story, it could be seen that Blacks were powerless before the Whites particularly in the early 1900s. There could be seen the reaction and nervousness of White people when they felt that Blacks were heading towards a better life (Birjandy,et,al,2018). One of the main things that could be seen during the time when this story was written is the inequality that used to be done between the Black and White people. Blacks were targeted everywhere in South America and treated inhumanly by White people. There is no doubt that William in his story has depicted discrimination that Black people were facing but at the same, there could be seen a positive point that William has highlighted. Blacks were struggling hard for improving their lives.

Conclusion

By taking a look at both the stories of William Faulkner, many things became clear and one of these things that could be witnessed from both the above-mentioned stories is that William is raising his voice for the rights of Black Americans. This fact cannot be denied that his voice was not enough for making a visible difference in the lives of Black Americans, through the power of his pen, he did what was his duty being a writer. In both mentioned stories it could be seen that William has described the exploitation of the rights of the Black Americans and how they had been treated since ages (Jansson,et,al,2018). William Faulkner also talked about the discrimination that Black Americans have faced in the 19th century. So as a whole, it could be concluded that William has questioned the society in both of his stories by pointing towards their inhumane behavior. Faulkner was one of the greatest writers who wrote about the lives of Black people, taking into account that his writings were a huge question mark on his identity because he was not himself Black. Moreover, his writing made him alienated from the other people of his lineage because of his increased approach towards Black.

The literary Analysis of Stories of O’ConnerThe way he expresses his grief for the lateThe wnnnt5hyhjn

A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor begins in the house where the family is planning their trip to Florida. The story manifests the inert opinion of the author about the consequence of life. Like numerous other writings of the writer, this specific story displays her profound spiritual vision and its use in her literary pieces efficiently to highlight on the place of holy thought in one’s life style. It also exposes O’Connor’s expert use of local style and the indigenous vernacular. The other story of the author is A temple of the holy Ghost. The story is in 3rd-person but from the standpoint of the child, who is a only 12 year old girl. It is about the girl who is isolated and wants grace in her life. In both the stories the author is presenting us with a lot of themes and literary devices like plot construction, setting, imagery etc.

This story A Good Man is hard to Find is the master piece of literary pieces of the author. It is written in the American southern gothic style. The author presents the theme of the good and evil, religion, manipulation, family etc ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"eI9ZLGjv","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}A Good Man Is Hard to Find Themes})","plainCitation":"(A Good Man Is Hard to Find Themes)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":368,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/AG7FPXRA"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/AG7FPXRA"],"itemData":{"id":368,"type":"webpage","title":"A Good Man is Hard to Find Themes","URL":"https://www.shmoop.com/good-man-hard-to-find/themes.html","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,3]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (A Good Man Is Hard to Find Themes). The most protuberant theme in the story is that of evil and good. In the story the grand ma sees the goodness in the form of being decent and dressing in a good manner. She has her own superficial view of goodness. However later in the story she faces the real evil in the form of The Misfit with no guilt at all. This understanding of what goodness is, as contrast to the real evil is the central theme of the story. The theme of religion in the story represents itself when the grandma prays to the Jesus in front of The Misfit in the expectation to charm his spiritual sense. The reality is the total opposite of that. He had thought about the Jesus more seriously than her and he had no belief in Jesus, and this leads him to think that there is no actual right or wrong and no ultimate point of life. Flannery O'Connor assumed her story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" as a account of good, evil, and heavenly elegance. Other critics, nevertheless, have gotten in it somewhat more cynical manner. A lot of them take it as the story of a self-centered lady who employs manipulation to achieve what she needs but is ultimately unable to save herself by her acts. There are numerous instants in the story when the grandma manipulates other people, as well as her family members and the criminal.

The other story of Conner that is A Temple of The Holy Ghost is representing the themes of Solitude, grace, pride, and acceptance ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"tg16qdk7","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(McManus)","plainCitation":"(McManus)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":366,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/2SEQVVA4"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/2SEQVVA4"],"itemData":{"id":366,"type":"webpage","title":"A Temple of the Holy Ghost by Flannery O'Connor","container-title":"The Sitting Bee","abstract":"In A Temple of the Holy Ghost by Flannery O’Connor we have the theme of pride, isolation, acceptance and grace. It is told in the third person and is positioned about a young, unnamed 12 year-old girl. From the start of the story the author is focusing on the themes of isolation and pride. These two themes are interwoven and go side by side in the story. The girl whom the story is about is living an isolated life. The theme is manifested in the story when we see that the girl does not sit with her cousins in the back seat rather she sits in front seat and keeps her head out of the window. Here we find the theme of pride and isolation. The girl loves to daydream about being a saint in her room. She eagerly wants grace in her life. But her pride does not let her think that the grace is not achieved in isolation or in feeling superior to other.

In the beginning of the story the setting of the story is in Atlanta and the family travels towards the south to Toombsboro. There's a sufficient amount of indigenous flavor along the way: we see old farms, Red Sammy's barbeque place, and some marvels too.The other half of the story is in the trench and the place is unknown and the trench is near ten feet below the road. On the other side of the road there is a forest too. The era in which it took place is not mentioned in the story but the cars and the reference to the book Gone with the wind shows that the era is of 1940s. About the other story A Temple of the Holy Ghost the setting is not much mentioned too. However, there is one place that is important to understand the context of the story. The church is the place where the transformation is seen in the character of the girl. She desperately wants grace in her life and she has a firm belief in religion too. The incident at the church is eye opening moment for her and at the return from the church she no more feels isolated.

The plot of the stories is woven closely and the audiences do not find a breach. The story A Good Man is hard to Find presents us with an initial situation that there is a criminal and he is lurking into the future of the characters ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"NNsRRYT2","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}A Good Man Is Hard to Find Plot Summary - Schoolbytes})","plainCitation":"(A Good Man Is Hard to Find Plot Summary - Schoolbytes)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":370,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/RBWDU2CW"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/RBWDU2CW"],"itemData":{"id":370,"type":"webpage","title":"A Good Man is Hard to Find plot summary - Schoolbytes","URL":"http://www.schoolbytes.com/english/summary.php?id=349#.XM0gZjBKgdU","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,3]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (A Good Man Is Hard to Find Plot Summary - Schoolbytes).

Next is the conflict that we see in the story. The family encounters an accident but no one is killed. The pleasant vacations suddenly turn into the unpleasant scenario. After that the complication arises when the Misfit the serial killer at large shows up. The situation is worsened when the grandmother tells him that she knows him. Then he kills all the family members one by one and only the grandma is left alive. Then the climax is the grandma’s acceptance of reality. She finally seeks grace but the suspense part is only in the last sentence when the grandma is shot in the chest three times by the killer. The denouement is the last part when the chaps of The Misfit return and her orders them to take her body and throw it. But the conclusion is the total reversal of what he did previously, he says that it is not the real pleasure in life (O'Connor).

The temple of the Holy Ghost begins with the fantasy of the young girl that is only 12-year-old and is in the want of grace. She is somewhat isolated from the other people and is proud too. She becomes fascinated by the saying that she heard by some kids at the show in the local fair. This is the main conflict in the story. The climax of the story occurs when the girl goes to the convent and there she prostrates and suddenly feels that she is in contact with God and prays that she gets rid of her meanness. By the end of the story she comes to know that the show is closed because maybe the hermaphrodite had opened up. She by the end of the story finds the real self of her, and the prayer that she made in the convent comes true.

The strong catholic beliefs of O’Conner are apparent in most of her stories. In the story A temple of the Holy Ghost the religious imagery is vivid and quite obvious ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"EgDdjHOl","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}Tantum Ergo: Religious Imagery in \\uc0\\u8220{}A Temple of the Holy Ghost\\uc0\\u8221{}})","plainCitation":"(Tantum Ergo: Religious Imagery in “A Temple of the Holy Ghost”)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":373,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/KHSB6USX"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/Tqq4tlqy/items/KHSB6USX"],"itemData":{"id":373,"type":"webpage","title":"Tantum Ergo: Religious Imagery in \"A Temple of the Holy Ghost\"","URL":"http://www.flanneryoconnor.com/zitotemple.html","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,3]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Tantum Ergo: Religious Imagery in “A Temple of the Holy Ghost”). The central character of the story the child in loneliness in her chamber, reflects that she will be a saint one day. The apex of the story occurs in a nunnery. It is of great significance. O'Connor used the hermaphrodite to demonstrate that love of Divinity resides in every one of us, no matter they are attractive, horrible, rich, deprived or anyplace between. Even the hermaphrodite, is a ridiculous sign of the harmony of male and female, a shrine of Deity is a divine thing.

The other story is no short of the use of imagery. The visual imagery is the most important one in the story. The hat of grandma is the symbol of her superficial idea of grace and class. She wears that hat to show her class and give an impression that she is a real lady. There is a good amount of the descriptions of the surroundings in which the characters are. In the beginning of the story the common room in which all the family members are sitting is described in minute details. The elders are sitting on the sofa while the kids are sitting on the floor reading the minute pars from the paper. The ditch in which they fall the authors gives us information that it was ten feet away from the road. Also, the description of the jungle is vivid. The imagery used by the author is giving a clear idea about the setting and the atmosphere of the place and time in which the story is represented.

Both the stories of the author are abundant in the use of literary devices. The four literary devices that are discussed in the essay are the most prominent ones. O’Conner expresses a clearly religious theme in both of the stories. He owns catholic religious views depict in the story. The eternal conflict of good and evil presented in the stories highlights the standing of virtue. And the evil or the immoral conducts are condemned in the story.

Essay on “A Couple of Quiet Young Guys by Hugh Garner”

Introduction

"A Couple of Quiet Young Boys" is part of Hugh Garner's Best Stories written in 1963. The story starts off at an all-night diner, where a girl becomes the victim of sexual assault. The character of the girl is denoted as the "pretty little thing." After getting assaulted the girl reports the events to the cook of the diner, named Slim. She questions the cook: "why do all men act like bastards Slim?" However, as the girl departs, Slim becomes the victim himself. However, instead of a sexual assault, he is robbed at gunpoint by "a quiet young guy." This paper will analytically analyze and discuss "A Couple of Quiet Young Boys by Hugh Garner" in regards to the dilemma surrounding female sexual assault victims and appearance of the assaulter.

Discussion

The author has done justice to the concept of sexual assault by denying the myth that female victims like getting sexually assaulted. It is interesting how the story written by Garner is way ahead of its time in terms of the views that he has pertained. Garner denies the fact that women are masochists and enjoy getting involved with violent men who abuse them. This fact raised by the author is quite significant, because women indeed get questioned that what did they to provoke the attack. In the story, Garner portrays the beauty of the girl as the cause of her misery (Garner, 1071). The author comments on the young woman's transition from a frightened and scared individual who just got assaulted to a composed docile female. This fact shows that the girl is trying to portray herself up to mark with the society's standards. However, her appearance, unruly hair and dirt in her hands tell a completely different story.

This story puts great emphasis on the appearance of individuals. The author tries to tell the reader that at times appearances can be deceiving and one can never judge what the other person will do. For instance, in the story the girl tells Slim about her attacker: "You saw him tonight…..he wasn’t good looking, but kind of shy and clean.” Further, even Slim describes his robber as “a quiet young guy.” The author tries to tell that girls are more at risk of getting assaulted or attacked by “a quiet guy” as opposed to mythical creatures like Frankenstein’s monster and Quasimodo (Garner, 1971). The concept of consent is also highlighted as the girl tells Slim: “this time was different and the other guys were just dates….if you watched yourself, nothing happened, and sometimes it was fun." The female character is trying to tell that she has dated in the past and things have never gone far enough that anyone would force her (Garner, 1971). The female character is constantly shunning how women are treated in the male dominant society.

The author in a way is trying to tell that no one asks to get harassed or objectified regardless of how they appear. Garner made it crystal by writing about Slim’s robbery. He did not ask for it and nor was his appearance denoting wealth. Similarly, regardless of how pretty a woman is she is not asking or inviting a man to come and rape her. It is unfortunate that regardless of being a victim the girl chooses to keep her appearance uptight. She is trying to hide all the stains and is brave enough to tell the person she confided in that she will be around and that too for a long time.

Conclusion

The way Garner portrays the alienation of women in his stories shows how sensitive he feels about sexual violence. Garner’s stories are important to showcase the national mood. Like all his other stories, in “A Couple of Quiet Young Guys” Garner is trying to create awareness. The way Garner has depicted sexual violence is basically the representation of viciousness on a broader scale. He is trying to tell that the victims are not mere dummies of psychological, physiological and social forces that are past their control. Another important point that Garner's stories raise is that all the victims struggle when they are trying to make a conscious decision. The worst thing is that at times, the decisions that they take can prove to be fatal. Lastly, his stories shed light on the fact that monsters can be hidden behind the calmest and shy faces. A person can never judge someone based on their appearance. It is not necessary for someone to look like a monster to have horrific tendencies.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

According to Skloot (par. 1-3) states that the “Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” explores various topics including an informed contest in medicine and science, racial bias in the medical field, and Lacks’ family history. The author reveals that the minority groups, including the black community, remain the backbone of medical study and medicines have been developed from the research. However, the author emphasizes that the research by the medical team lacked moral and ethics and failed to protect her dignity by offering patient-doctor confidentiality.

After reading the book, I by the fact that the scientific and medical community failed to act ethically when treating Henrietta Lacks and her children. The treatment reflects the belief that most medical staff view themselves as more superior than their patients. Henrietta originated from the black community which faced discrimination and was viewed as the lesser beings by the white community, a fact that added to her disrespect and that of her children. The Lack’s cells remain the first immortal cells developed in the laboratory and remain the foundation for medical discoveries, including cancer medicines and vaccines in cloning, gene mapping and vitro fertilization as highlighted by (Skloot par. 3-4).

Skloot (par. 2) states that the cells were taken without Lacks and family contest. It remains unethical for the scientists to utilize Lacks’ children in their study without their knowledge and publish the medical records in addition to releasing them to press without their knowledge and consent. The scientists should have discussed the issue with the family before conducting the research and publishing the records to avoid violating the privacy rights of the family. Additionally, it remains unethical for the scientists and medics to benefit from Lacks’ study without extending the benefits to the family. The family has a right to benefit from the research because it was used for the study, which has benefited the world and many patients internationally.

According to Skloot (par. 5), the legislations governing such research were drafted in the 1970s and remain founded on the outdated belief that anonymized samples should not be contested before getting utilized in a study. Skloot (. 4) feels that the introduction of technologies including medical websites and Google Street View will introduce advancement in science and medicine at affordable rates. However, the author feels that ethically and legally, the medical and scientific fields are not for the technology. Therefore, scientist and medical staff must update the regulations because personal privacy remains important. They must review and regulate their research laws with the aim of protecting the families and people used in their study to ensure more advances and breakthroughs in science. People will trust the scientists when they treat them with the expected respect and the restoration of consent rights in the utilization of genetic information and genomes

In conclusion, the research by the medical team lacked moral and ethics and failed to protect her dignity by offering patient-doctor confidentiality. It remains unethical for the scientists to utilize Lack's children in their study without their knowledge and publish the medical records in addition to releasing them to press without their knowledge and consent. Personal privacy remains important and scientists must regulate their research, they must treat people with the expected respect and must restore consent rights and confidentiality with their patients. More so, scientist and medical staff must update the regulations because personal privacy remains important

The Rose of Time

Introduction

Bei Dao, meaning “Northern Island” is the pen name of a Chinese poet, “Zhao Zhenkai”. He chose this pen because he belongs to the North and his preference for solitude. The poet is well known for his representation of a group of Chinese poets who wrote as a reaction to the restriction that was imposed by the Cultural Revolution. The group of poets is titled as, “Misty Poets”. “The Rose of Time” is one of his famous writings that highlighted certain major themes and issues. It is one of the most celebrated poems that is composed of certain arresting and mysterious images that turned out to layout a distinctive musical key. The rose of time is presented as an image of the inevitability of productivity and growth adhering to the roots of despair. He is also known as one of the representatives of the “Exiled poets”. The rose of time is a writing that acted as a curtain to the divisions in which human life is classified. There is an impression of consciousness, taking into account that language is used as a tool to solve new world’s problems. Bei Dao has indulged his ideas in shapes, taking into account that the poem is more like a collection of elliptical images that turn over the lathe of the human thought and planet. It is asserted that this poem is more like a reflection of the past that is achieved by revisiting the earlier landscapes of life. Poet scratches his old outline into the dirt and then readjusts the mask of his own face. There is a stream of humanity and refutation of myths that freed the stance of human story. There is an underlying impression of political change accompanied by elegant and intense impressionism.

Discussion

The rose of time is constructed on the strong themes of sense of rootlessness, conformist society and disillusionment. The catch line of the poem is the echoes that enforce life. The stance of self-scrutiny and staginess of mirrors that lead to the transformation of ideas. There is an underlying approach of “Democracy Movement” that refers to the emotions and feeling of a layman. It is significant to note that the poem reflects the stance of reshaped governments, civilizations, traditions and other political scenarios that affect the lives of people in one way or other. The structure of poem highlights the alchemy of imaginations taking into account that each individual is in search of a truth that is actually believed by the society but hidden under the covers of the societal features. An analysis of the structure reveals that the poem flows in a systematic way accompanied by the flow of emotions and feelings that connect catch line to other and each thought to the next assumption. An evident example of this fact can be found in the second stanza where the poet explains the scene of sunset that is casual for our sights such as flying birds and then the approaching darkness.

It is significant to note that the structure of poem is more like a journey from life to death and how the poet coverts all the major themes of life such as trans of life, role of hardships and then the nature of life itself. Another example of this systematic structure is the last stanza where the bird of thought covers its journey from insight to the door of rebirth leading to the seas where everything dwells in depth. There is clear understanding of time, taking into account the passages that a human life has to cover in order to reach its destiny. Side by side, this universal truth is accompanied by the flashback of poet. It is significant to note that the poet focuses on the “desire of freedom” and the impression of unfulfilled expectations. Bei Dao treated this poem as a code that could convey the underlying feelings of a poet who has suffered exile as well as an unwanted revolution. There is a clear vision of the hampering that could lead to the existence of a layman’s life where there are a number of fears and tragic stories that added to the horizon of thought and broadened the vision of life.

The form of the poem also played a significant role in redefining it influence on the readers and its meaning taking into account that alliteration acted as a major stance of rhythm such as in the first line of poem, “when the watchman”. (Garner) The poets have used this technique in order to impart both intext and between the lines connectivity that can fulfill the aesthetic sense and appeal to the readers as well. The poet has also used rhythm as a tool that can connect the thoughts of poet in order to convey complete meaning, taking into consideration that there is an autonomous tone in the lyrics, paving the way for a musical essence. The text of the poem and poet are highly connected taking into account that the poet reflects his ideology of thought in the poem “The rose of time", taking into consideration what he thinks about his land.

It is asserted that poem also highlights the impression of elusive imagery and linguistic ambiguity that could highlight what it actually meant to be a survivor of the changing society and societal boundaries. The poem can also be treated as an expression of the fact that Bei used poetry for incorporating understanding and unity of political affairs. A dream time state can be inferred from the poetry, highlighting the idea that the text clearly reflects underlying nostalgia that shaped the writings of poet. Although the poetry seems much natural it is an impression of pessimism that the poet collected and felt during the course of events in his knife.

It is important to note that there is an essence of nightmarish that asserts the reality under the beauty of nature. An analysis of the poem reflects that poet has played with words in a highly artistic way, adhering to an equally artificial and natural way. Although the essence of imagery added to the aesthetic scene, side by the side there are several negative connotations that reflect the pessimistic attitude such as “seas” and “darkness”, taking into account that the idea of damp conditions is reflected. (Garner) Even the title of the poem is equally beautiful and brutal much like the thoughts of poet. Rose reflects the beauty of life but it is equally significant that rose presents the rebellious attitude of the poet to current happening because a rose is a flower that is soft in nature and it is equally beautiful but one can access a rose plant without thrones. It would not be wrong to say that the throne represents the brutality of time that has brought a number of changes to the world.

It is asserted that the idea of throne also reflects the poet’s ideology of democratic movement as well as the underlying revolution of Cultural Revolution that was a serious point of criticism for poet. it is also affirmative to say that the structure of poem reflects two stories, one of the sides is the beauty of nature where nature is captured in the nib of pen but on the other side, there is sheer loneliness and deprivation in the words. The use of words like knife, cry and conspiracy reflects how poet has used poetry as a major tool to address the flood of emotions that has brought great destruction to the emotions of the poet.

The theme of exile is also well suited taking into consideration the line, “you cross the bridge stepping in flute songs”. It is significant to note that the poet has assimilated all his life experiences in the poem in different words and connotations. All the events ranging from growing in the homeland to exile and the interference of external notions that hampered the original crux of life are expressed in a beautiful combination with the criticism of the writings of the poet. The theme of death is also presented in a unique form, associating it with the ideology of poet such as the fear of something that is evident and near to come.

Conclusion

“The rose of time” is not just poetry, in fact, it is the realistic and pictorial account of the scenarios that the poet has faced throughout his life. It is significant to note that there is no set dimension of the theme to which the poem is referred sill it is a universal account because all the events in the life are assembled and made part of the poetry. It is also important to note that each line is itself a story that reflects the idea of thoughts that are left unsaid in the flux of social associations and realms. In a nutshell, it can be highlighted that the underlying story of the poetry reflects the ideology that is hidden in the beauty of nature as well as the stance of revival that is only possible if thoughts are given the freedom to float and prevail.

Analyze The Value Of Self-knowledge In Gaines' A Lesson Before Dying.

“A lesson before death”

Gaines wrote this book in 1993; it is almost entirely fictitious, even though he made use of various elements and related events from the period described. He tells the story in a pleasantly languid style that excellently suggests the immobility of the southern society and the oppressive heat in which the drama takes place (Jones, 1997). The fact that the novel is so astonishingly strong is mainly because Gaines of his protagonist, the teacher, has not made a bold hero, not a passionate fighter against injustice, but a doubting intellectual who feels himself beyond his environment. He really wants nothing more than to leave, not only because of self-evident racism, but also because of the equally stifling faith of his black fellow citizens. In fact, his love for the beautiful Vivian seems to concern him more than the imminent execution. What also helps is that Gaines lets his protagonist raise his voice against that injustice only in a single passage. Precisely because of that often neutral-descriptive tone, which sometimes sounds dull, this almost forgotten book makes a big impression.

The widely lauded book “lesson before dying” describes the relationship between a young black man on death row and his teacher in the America of the forties. When the black young man Jefferson is sentenced to death after he has been wrongly accused of the murder of a white cafe man, village teacher Grant Wiggins, under pressure from his environment, takes on the task of escorting him on death row. Wiggins is a bitter man trained for an Afro-American. He silently opposes both the segregation, the realization that he cannot change anything, and against his own background. The only moderately pious intellectual who prefers James Joyce to read the Bible hates his job and has a deep rooted resentment towards his cultural and social heritage, without being able to change it. His restrained anger only comes when he hears two mulattos of racist language in a pub and almost kills them. Ever since his lawyer called him "a pig" during his defense, Jefferson started to consider himself as such. However, his godmother Miss Emma wants him to face his death as a man. Jefferson has little to the lessons of the pious, simple village pastor. Wiggins, however, knows, in spite of himself, that he can finally see that he is a full-fledged person and that he can withdraw from his depression and self-hatred. This book is a poignant narrative about the segregated America of the forties, an icon from the African-American writing of grandmaster Ernest J. Gaines.

The book does not offer a good outcome, but examines human dignity in a harsh world in which the cards are ruthlessly unfairly distributed. And although the story takes place specifically in the southern states before the civil rights movement of the sixties, we all know that a boy like Jefferson is now, in the new millennium, an easy target of a deeply prejudiced justice system in every part of America. The discussion that the book raises about the unequal distribution of power, in which white men decide the fate of black boys, is painfully topical. In the book, Gaines connects that historical awareness with an unrelenting timelessness. The tension between these two elements, although in a very different form, also arises with the character of Jefferson's teacher, Grant Wiggins. Wiggins is sent to the young Jefferson, while he is already on death row, to learn how to die as an honorable man. Wiggins resists his task, which he experiences as useless. He is driven by a desire for individualism and freedom, but must ultimately recognize that he cannot separate himself from where he comes from. For who are we, if we reject the place that has formed us? In Wiggins a struggle with identity is shown that is completely recognizable, especially now, in a time characterized by large migration flows and societies that are struggling with identity crises.

Gain's deep sense of human grief creates an atmosphere of silent and ever-present threat in a lesson before death. It is a silence under which it rushes. Young Jefferson cannot escape his fate, however unjustly that is. But in the maelstrom of inevitable events a lesson is needed. Namely that our humanity is inextricably linked to a sense of self-worth. A lesson before death is thus a story that elevates human dignity above time and place. A white liquor trader is killed in a robbery involving three black boys. One of them, Jefferson, survives the incident, and maintains during the trial that he was present by chance. We write the forties, in the still segregated Louisiana. The young man therefore has no chance and is sentenced to death by a jury of white men. The godmother of Jefferson is present at the session but registers, especially because she already knows the outcome, but one thing: that the word 'pig' falls in the description of her stepson. She manages to persuade Grant Wiggins, the only black intellectual in the town, to visit Jefferson in prison and to make sure he dies like a man, not like an animal. Wiggins initially opposes the assignment and initially does not see any perspective in Jefferson's passive attitude. Only when he has given him a notepad with a pencil does the practically illiterate boy get out of his lethargy and start writing. But Wiggins also gives him a radio, and that leads to a high-level conflict with the black preacher of the town. After all, Jefferson 'needs God in the cell, and not that sin box.' The fact that Wiggins ultimately achieves what the godmother asked him, despite the predictably bad outcome, feels like a small victory.

Analyzing a Visual Text

In 1972, Chef Boy-ar-dee created an ad and “The Ravioli Smile” was the slogan for that ad. A child is depicted in the ad with a bright and lively smiling having a spoon that is full of the company’s ravioli in his hand. The ravioli is described beautifully below the picture stating that, “Some kids even laugh out loud. They think it’s fun food, treat food celebration food. But it’s more. Chef Boy-ar-dee Ravioli is a nutritious food too.” The main purpose of this ad is to attract many people towards buying ravioli for the kids. According to the description, ravioli is not just a fun food for celebration, but also a nutritious food for kids. The tagline and picture of a smiling child attracts parents as they also want to see the same smile on the faces of their children. It is clear from the description and the picture that the product is a logical and simple choice to buy. The product is more appealing to mothers as they find it an easy, quick and nutritious food to prepare for their children as they love the taste of it.

In the visual of this ad, it can be seen that the young boy is enjoying eating the product that is depicted by his smile. At the bottom corner of the ad, it is stated, “Found in mom’s basement.” It shows that this product is highly approved by mothers as the company understands that parents are much careful about the taste and nutrition of their children. Ravioli is the original and genuine recipe of pasta sauce and it has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. A careful observation of the ad tells that the words “Ravioli” and “smile” have been placed in direct alignment with the smile on the boy’s face. The company is aware of the complex thinking of parents and their concern about the health of kids. The portion size as shown in the ad seems unusually big for a young kid, but it indicates children’s love for having larger, bigger and stuffed meals. A feeling of stability is produced by the placement of picture as horizontal and flat on the page. There are warm and vibrant colors in the shirt of the young kid and their combination with the pink background give a friendly and trustworthy impact of the company of people. Generally kids are seen as picky eaters, therefore, this ad makes the kids satisfy by showing a happy and smiling child. The audience can be easily drawn towards the simplicity of this ad and the clear and simple idea depicted in it. The simple ideas are that this product should be bought because it is cheap, nutritious and easy to cook, and will make the kids happy and smile brightly.

Ethos is applied in this ad through the picture of a kid and the description as well. The smile of the kid is very warming and huge and he seems very happy. It shows that the child is truly and genuinely happy with the meal. The target audience is given an impression that the child is enjoying the product so the other children will definitely love it. The credibility that is created by the boy and his attitude towards the product is transferred to the Ravioli product and the company’s sale through it. It will make the parents think that they should trust the product and their children will also like it. Parents trust the product because of the simple description stated below the picture in the ad. By reading that Ravioli is both a fun and nutritious product, parents get interested in it. They always try to find new ways of feeding their kids in the best way and this product seems a perfect and appropriate solution for them. Ethos is found in another way that is the description “found in mom’s basement.” It is a common belief that the cooking of mothers is perfect and best in the world. Therefore, it seems like the support of mother is with this brand and they trust it.

Pathos is also found in this ad to evoke the emotions of the readers and make them buy this product. The biggest example of pathos is the smiling face of the kid. The beautiful smile because of a food product seems lovely and evokes the emotions of people. Parents are especially drawn towards buying this product as they also want to see the same smile on the face of the kids. If a meal makes a child happy and cheerful, then it should surely be bought as it is a win-win for the company and parents. By calling it a fun and celebration food, the emotions of people are also triggered as they would feel that this product will bring a smile and happiness to their kids and the kids will enjoy it. The phrase “found in mom’s basement” also creates feelings of pathos in people as the bond of kids with their mothers is very sweet. Mothers are always worried and concerned about their kids” health and nutrition and the kids are rarely satisfied with any other food except the one cooked by their mothers. The pathos evoke emotions in parents and they tend to buy the product.

Logos, the appeal to logic, is presented in the ad both through the description and the picture. The first logic is that it is a nutritious food. Parents thinks that if the food is nutritious then they should definitely buy it for their kids. Of course every parent wants his or her child to be fed with better and nutritious food that has a good quality and quantity. The quantity of this product is also large which is also what parents want that their child gets enough meal. The ravioli is said to be a deal with 20 cents per serving which is also an appeal to logic for the buyers. It shows that the product is simple and cheap. According to the ad, ravioli means a smiling kid, and it is believed that a smiling kid means smiling and happy parents. Then it is necessary for parents to buy the product to make their kids happy and cheerful. Even the recipe is mentioned in the description that make parents aware of the ingredients used for the preparation of the product. The fact that it is easy to prepare also appeals to the logic of parents that the product is simple and mothers can easily cook it for the kids and feed them. It says that the kids don’t stop at one serving shows that the meal has an appealing and delicious taste that would make the parents think of buying it so that their kids enjoy eating it.

Analyzing British Text

To create a persuasive and eloquent speech that will have an enticing effect on the audience, a speaker must employ rhetoric and literary devices. Winston Churchill attained remarkable success in molding his speech into a strong and powerful political narrative. On June 4th, 1940, his speech to the House of Commons about the inexplicable evacuation of Dunkirk, is an example of his well-crafted rhetorical speech. This essay will analyze Winston Churchill's speech "We shall fight on the beaches" and scrutinize rhetorical and literary devices along with genre specification in his oratory.

Cannadine revealed that Churchill overcomes many difficulties in his speech. He hones his speech by studying speech of many renowned orators. The time and setting of Churchill's speech in the British House of Commons on 4th June were during the unforeseen evacuation of Dunkirk. Churchill's speech is a remarkable example of the rhetoric style. He incorporated key elements of rhetorical style in order to persuade Bruisers that they must surrender to Germany or made peace negotiations. Moreover, he wanted to urge the United States to join Britain as an ally in the Second World War. The speech specifically targeted soldiers to boost their morale and for America, who was watching the war from sidelines (Puputti).

Rhetoric and Literary devices used in speech

According to Aristotle, any form of communication either it is written or spoken which aims at persuading the audience, which in case of Churchill’s speech is very well presented, must include three vital elements of rhetorical style that are:

Logos: to give reason and logic in the message to influence the audience's minds.

Pathos: It involves emotions and feelings along with the vivid imagery to portray a complete picture of spoken words in front of the onlookers.

Ethos: to engage the audience, the speaker must show his credibility and trustworthiness to gain his complete trust.

Now, in the case of Churchill's speech, all three elements were meant to be in an equal amount, and specifically, he relied on emotional appeal than the logical approach. His choice of choosing an emotional approach over logos is justified. As war with no exceptions, the solution of any problem, so he convinces Britishers to surrender to Germany to end those dark times.

Unlike other politicians, Churchill was an exceptional writer, and he used to write his speeches, which are of great importance to date. In his speech he attempts to prepare his people to the cause of defending their country. He delivered this speech in the direct response of Nazi forces gaining power and control in Europe and moving forward to England and France. He said in his speech that

“We must defend our country no matter what the consequences will be. We will fight on the beaches, on the land ad we will defend our country with every possible effort. We must surrender and give up to the Germans (Tillotson)”.

He uses persuasive style to awaken the spirit of his people to fight against Hitler, although British forces retreat from the Dunkirk miserably. In the above mentioned quotation, it can be observed that the use ethos is vivid along with the word "we" that is showing the strength and power of the nation.

Anaphora

Many political orators use literary devices in their speeches to strengthen their certain ideas and to make them clear to the audience. The use of anaphora, a literary device, is evident in the speech of Winston Churchill.

“We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end”.

The repetition of “we shall” in successive sentences adds unity and emphasis in his speech.

Alliteration

It is the repetition of the same letter or sound at the starting of connected words. Such as in the speech of Churchill, he used alliteration.

“I see dull, drilled and docile masses of Hun soldiery”.

Antistrophe

He utilized the repetition of words at the end of successive phrases to inculcate his message in his audience.

“…the love of peace, the toil for peace, the strife for peace…”

He wanted to sow a seed of peace in the minds of world leaders by delivering his speech at that crucial moment.

Assonance

He also used assonance in his historical speech to make it outstanding and interesting so that listeners will not become tedious. He also eliminated the factor of monotony from his speech by using words having the same sound endings.

“The odious apparatus of Nazi rule.”

In the above mentioned part of his speech, the use of /əs/ sound is indicating the use of assonance.

Epizeuxis

It is the repetition of words that occurs in phrases with no intervening words to affect the tone of the narrative.

“Never give in__ never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small…”

You must have noticed that the immediate occurrence of the word "never" not only shows the determination of the speaker but also to keep the morale high of the listeners. He used this device to make his point clear.

Hypophora

This is the technique of asking a question and then answering it immediately. He used this device to show the direction of his thoughts. The orators especially use this technique by addressing a certain issue and then answer to that question in the light of their own proposed solutions.

“You ask, what is our aim? The answer is Victory. Victory at any cost”.

BBC documentary about Grenfell Tower

The tragedy of Grenfell Tower had engulfed the world for eternal sadness just the way it engulfed the tower with fire. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle had introduced “the art of Rhetoric” in which he introduced ethos, pathos and logos. The use of rhetorical style in the political discourse had a great impact on the relation of speaker and the audience.

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn visited the scene after the incident took place in the tower. The response of May was way different than Corbyn. While talking to media, she said:

“We will look into this matter and investigation will be carried out with full responsibility.”

Her statement lacks emotions and sympathy for victims of the ferocious incident. But her statement was highly logical, that is logos but lack pathos and ethos. People were expecting her to visit the families of victims and the survivors but instead she gave a very political statement which she shouldn’t give at that sensitive moment. People were all mourning around the United Kingdom and she only kept her focus on investigations. She issued a very formal and practical statement that was not comforting at all for the victims. She said:

An immediate fire report will be produced and police will inquire this incident to acquire the reasons behind the incident.

The above statement given by May was also very formal. She did not talk about providing shelter to the victims. All the statements of Theresa May’s were empathy free. Her words were really cold which caused an eruption of criticism on her. As a prime minister, she should have issued some moderate statements regarding the unexpected incident.

Jeremy Corbyn has acted opposite to Theresa May. He met survivors and show his condolences to the families of victims. He also met with rescue workers who put themselves in danger and saved so many lives. He showed his gratitude towards relief workers, emergency services and volunteers who helped people from getting out of the building. He showed his anger and disappointment towards Government that they did not take any measures on time to ensure the safety of its residents.

He said:

“I am really annoyed that fire spread throughout the building and the residents of the building are angry as well. Their questions were not answered by the building management and Government. They ask me to be their voice and I will help them.”

Furthermore, he ensures to the residents of the burnt building that he would not leave them alone in this hardship. He would himself put forth their demands to Government. The words like “annoyed” are the emotions that showed his anger towards political system and become the way of catharsis for many of the people. He showed concern through his words for his people.

He felt the same as the people of his country were feeling at that moment. He added:

“There are thousands of residential buildings and every single resident of that building will frightened today. They all must wondering that they can be next. They might be looking for answers for less secured building. Their mental peace would be at risk.”

His response was very empathetic and strong with reasonable logic and emotions. His speech was fully formed around rhetorical style which can influence its hearers in a very positive manner. His response was full of sentiments and emotions based on humanity (Lahel).

The narrative of survivors from Grenfell Tower incident, is also very heart wrenching. The BBC’s made a documentary on Grenfell which uses personal narratives, social media and the original location to collect authentic material for the documentary. Shahin Sadafi who used to live on fifth floor of the building, said that the building was our base and concrete fortress. Another resident said that I felt very proud while living in that building. These painful words showed the agony and frustration of the survivors who lost their loved ones in the ferocious incident. The speech of people who outlived that horrible night was deeply polite and respectful during the documentary. Their speech has a way strong effect on the viewers of the documentaries. They narrated their part of the story and viewers piece it down to the full story. By their strong and full of emotions speech which generally lack traditional literary devices, the onlookers were greatly moved. The purpose of this documentary was to evaluate the reasons that give birth to this fierce accident. The other purpose was to arouse feelings of pity in people so that they can show empathy in the common mass. In this way they can help those who had traumatized lives ahead.

Conclusion

As shown in the analysis of Winston Churchill’s speech “We shall fight on the beaches” that he had used multiple literary devices and rhetorical devices to influence his audience. He added life into his speech by using evocative vocabulary with the addition of remarkable phrases. As far as BBC documentary on Grenfell is concerned, that was filmed solely to raise feelings of pity in the people to urge them to participate and help in arranging campaigns for relieving the stress and trauma of the survivors by making them talk about the incident. These devices help in producing a versatile and influencing piece of writing.

Analyzing of King’s Balance of His Twin Appeals

In 1963, Martin Luther King was arrested for a non-violent protest in Birmingham when racial segregation was at its peak. He wrote his letter from Birmingham jail in response to the criticism by the eight clergymen who called these protestors unwise and condemned their leaders. He began his letter by referring to the clergymen as peacekeepers and praised their sincerity while setting a tone for his main arguments.

Martin Luther King created a beautiful balance between religion and patriotism by placing religious versus for justice in regard to civil rights in America. He used references from religion and used scriptural texts from the Bible to evoke emotions of his followers. He does not emphasize religion over patriotism or patriotism over religion but he points out that acting on the religious teachings, it is possible to apply religious convictions in our relationships with our fellow citizens. He was religious and his religious preaching was the greatest force for driving the Civil Rights movement. The letter from Birmingham Jail was written to a group of his Christian followers and he used a lot of religious arguments to appeal to his followers.

He created a wonderful masterpiece with the right balance of his religious knowledge by using tenets of the faith and his political knowledge to support his arguments in favor of the anti-segregation movements.

He said in his letter that he had come to Birmingham because he saw injustice there. He left his town in the same way as prophets had left their homes to go and eliminate injustice in other towns. He further quoted Saint Augustine by including his saying in his letter that a law that does not provide justice is not at all a law. He then relates his religious point of view with his political views and said that Blacks have the right to speak against the law that does not fulfill its purpose. An unjust law is of no use and religion also allows to blindly follow the unjust law (editor, 2014).

Furthermore, he addressed the comments of critics that segregation laws must be fought in courts rather than on streets but King explained that only direct action of Blacks can force White people to confront racism and make peace dialogues. As protestors were breaking laws and according to the Old Testament, the unjust laws are not to be followed so that is why protestors were breaking laws and express their patriotism with the country and with their people. They were breaking immoral and unjust laws just to show the right path to the people (Jones, 2010).

He also extends his criticism on the leadership of clergymen who are also equally responsible for transforming a society. According to King, the present churches have fallen far from their true roots of early Christian origins. They had merged themselves in the society rather than becoming the source of inspiration for people. His opposition to segregation is religious. He believed that an unjust law allows majority to take hold of power and then majority can limit the actions of a minority. The law must apply rules equally to both Blacks and Americans. If it fails to do so then it is an unjust law and should not be practiced. He further elaborates that these laws do not provide basic rights to Blacks and they are not created on the basis of a true democratic system (Berry, 2005).

Although Martin Luther King used many religious allusions in his letter to support his arguments but he emphasized more on patriotism by stating that the south is in dire need of having patriots who can participate in the civil rights movement. The letter is not a religious document but a motivational speech on why patriotism is important in ending racial discrimination.

The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner

Introduction

“The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner” written by James Hogg in 2009. The novel is written in three parts including "the editor's narrative," "private memoirs and confessions of a sinner," and "the end of the memoir." James Hogg’s novel is a meta-fictional in structure as it includes a religious satire and gothic elements. It is notable to mention that the attempt to distinguish and classify the novel into a single genre is just a venture as it presents various themes. This essay recognizes various attributes of the novel which legitimize the identification of a gothic novel, its genres, a religious satire, and being a meta-fiction. It is essential to highlight various political and literary spheres of Scotland during the writing of this masterpiece. Moreover, one must be taken into consideration that the genre of the novel is being focused according to its time, instead of its appearance. The focus of the entire review of this piece of literature is to critically analyze prominent domains of religious satire and gothic presented by James Hogg in this novel.

Discussion

First of all, it is necessary to understand the theological parody of Hogg’s ingenious literary craft with the help of Scotland’s situation at that time. It is noteworthy to mention that it was a time period when efforts of justifying corporeality and all things perceptible were at their peak. During those circumstances, there was a complete deterioration of people’s belief. For gaining true knowledge, religious principles were altered and were considered as a source of uncertainty, instead of a singular medium to provide true knowledge. Extremities of its practices when not ready to preserve its divine nature, but they were continually queried as men employ reason to uphold justice. Hogg informed readers about the decision of Arabella Calvert in ‘the Editor’s narrative’ to not show up in the trial of George Colwan’s murder. Arabella Calvert could have saved both Thomas Drummond and the person accused of the heinous act as she was the only witness of fratricide. Her unwillingness to not show up at the trail may seem unnatural due to her friend Ridsley, who is known for “never mistook one man for another in his life, which makes the mystery of the likeness between this incendiary and Drummond the more extraordinary” (Hogg 67). She discloses the similarity of Gil Martin in her recount of the critical occurrence to Mrs. Logan.

She was afraid that she would not be able to talk to the judge in order to accept her words as she could not persuade a fellow eye witness to come with her in the court. The visit of George Colwan’s to Arthur’s Seat is experienced as echoes by Arabella Calvert. Colwan was found guilty which resulted in incarceration due to his defensive aggression with his brother Robert. The Judge perceived that his statement is just like “a very extraordinary story” (Hogg 43). The readers are made aware of the disturbance made through lack of logical explanation. In theology, there is a perception for strange occurrences as evil is linked with demons. It is believed that the light treatment of both George's words and Arabella's words disgrace their integrity. Due to this, the status of Pittock’s position reiterates in the period of Enlightenment where confessions sanctions as a religion satire because various explanations have taken primacy in the verdict of presence.

Hoggs employed such validations through the novel by extended these to the gothic element. The mysterious existence of Gil-Martin and the immeasurable connotations of devils with damnations, not just to Robert, but to readers as well are considered as a work of gothic intent. The novel is the assessment of very cultural operations of Scotland. It is notable to mention that gothic elements are introduced at first during the encounter of Robert Wringham with “a young man of a mysterious appearance” (Hogg 96). Robert was expressing his thankfulness to his life when he was standing in the woods. The company of Gil-Martin caused trouble for the parents of Robert. Robert had gone through a major change after his engagement with Gil, which demonstrates the oblivious state in which Robert was suppressed with his sense of self. Robert disoriented from his beliefs and religion as he professed the prospect about existing as two selves due to his disoriented mind. Mrs. Keeler made vital charges against Robert and Robert was trying to defend him by claiming that he has “a second self; or that there is some other being who appears in [his] likeness” (Hogg 146). Hogg is trying to demonstrate two main possibilities for the presence of Gil-Martin. Between religious fanaticism and devil worship, she might be a metaphorical expression or she might be a projection of Robert's alter ego that was undermined and crushed by his fascination.

It is also essential to mention that the domain of challenges related to classifying Confessions recognized as a gothic novel. This particular consideration would advocate its main aim as the prospect of drawing the Scottish experience. The main idea of Scottish practice recognized as “uncanny, second self.” It is established as a weird involvement because of the political tussle with Britain. It is interesting to explore that the idea of Hogg’s Confessions is closely linked with the perspectives established by Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is a clear explanation of the particular idea of exploring conflicts all the individuals who are accepting and the ones who strictly stick to their traditional beliefs. It is noticeable to identify the prevailing difference between two different approaches. The traditional phenomenon concerning the attributes links with the works of the devil whereas the former concept considers the complications of the human mind due to different forms of pressures exist in the society. All the confusion relevant to the details of Gil’s character highlight all the concerns relevant to the display of imagination set by Robert. The focus of Hogg through this particular idea is to present information about the psychological illness. The issue of psychological concerns closely related to all the repressive aspects of religion. This concept can also explore through the example of the individual who put himself into immense trouble to eradicate all form of evil from the world. The failure of identifying potential inability to perform work linked with the broader application of the principles set by the individual. Inadequate information about all the intentions of Robert is troubling because it displays negative features of the actual theological practices. It is one major source of discrimination which gives the adverse impression to the readers. Adoption of the contrasting environment makes it difficult to reach the true domain of reality.

Theology is presented as a medium that hypothetically consists of extremism when grabbed unmediated and unmonitored. Hogg's integration of two voices in Confessions produces an operational binary within it. This qualifies his report to be one of which is free from prejudices, hence providing readers with a dispassionate view of Robert's encounters. It puts forth the idea that reason salutations scriptural doctrines in a way that it promotes a rational elucidation rather than embracing a superficial approach in discriminating the words of the celestial. Here, Confessions affirm the restraint on religious consecration: the vulnerability to self-righteousness and misleadingly subjecting others who are seemingly less virtuous, to less earnest individuals. Both Wringham and Robert discourse their views in the nonexistence of an unbiased party. After being pursued persistently by Robert, readers might be led to assume that he might grow intolerant and irritated by the situation. His lack of cruel intent towards an individual who has been causing him uneasiness led to his segregation, and it opposes Robert's impression of his brother. However, as the novel develops into the personal statement by Robert Wringham himself, the inconsistencies of the account raise the question of the trustworthiness of the Editor’s Narrative. Instead, the novel takes a diverse trajectory by depicting George’s guiltless disposition as he “cannot for [his] life see for what other purpose it can be” (Hogg 33) that Robert is behind his steps other than longing for a “reconciliation.” Despite the nonappearance of a spiritual context, George is perceived to be more merciful as compared to his brother. It also describes the misrepresentation that correlates one’s faith to one’s principled standing. Self-righteousness is further denounced through George Colwan, who appears to have taken Robert Wringham’s character. The novel, therefore, tries to highlight the unreasonableness of those who have misplaced their reason to the literal transcriptions of the Bible. While the gothic component supports massively to the novel's appearance of religious ridicule, its meta-fictional quality adds weight into its scorning attribute. Readers are first informed about the subject matter of the novel through the perspective of a narrator whose account is not consequent from firsthand experience.

Hogg’s employment of classification that exemplifies an abnormal physical profile strengthens the dark story of his novel, especially in a period where logic is not able to reason out a wraithlike presence. It is this particular feature that Arabella Calvert was certain about her account would be disallowed during the trial due to its vicious nature. This is especially mystifying when Gil confesses to holding the ability to “attain the same likeness” of a man’s features whenever he envisages on their opinions and character. The unexpected nature has been related to the masquerade of “Satan” (Hogg 100) as Rabina, Robert’s mother, pointed out to him that “it is one of the devil’s most profound wiles to appear like one” (Hogg 101); one mentioning to Robert’s description of his new acquaintance to be “an angel of light” (Hogg 100). Spiritual references seem to focus on the Wringham’s domestic, bordering their devotion to reliance with fixation. As their lives are verbalized by the scriptures, the paranormal does not seem to be an irrational subject. This evil is then anticipated onto the image of Gil-Martin as he never fails to invoke in the minds of those who have seen him as a being resembling an ‘apparition’; a term cited limitless times throughout Confessions. Time and again, readers are made to anticipate on the authenticity of the character. Furthermore, Robert’s continuous expostulation about his brother and father being “castaways, reprobates, aliens from the church and the true faith, and cursed in time and eternity” (Hogg 29) echoes fascination to proclaim his self-righteous knowledge about true malevolent. Here, it can be pragmatic that the gothic crux of the novel branches from its religious demeanor. This then sets the scornful tone of Confessions which deems such affairs to be a product of extreme religious practices. Robert was trained to carry out religious obligations, but he was the only person who prays for the elect. Robert has kept under the strict theological stimulus, and as the story progress, it laid the footing for judicious to his peculiar account.

Fatefully, he fails to perceive that committing murder and taking circumstances into his own hands are irreligious in their own rights due to the fact that one person is taking the task of Mighty in his own hand. He suffered from the allegations of his own values due to the inability to recognize the extent of his own activities. Negative light is being shed on the factual theological practices due to the lack of knowledge about Robert’s intentions. A contrasting environment is mentioned by the author in which both brothers were brought up. These contrasting environments demonstrate the favor of education over the other. According to the author, “George was “educated partly at the parish-school, and partly at home” (Hogg 17). Under these circumstances, he tends to be kind-hearted and generous. However, Robert considered his brother an enemy of the church which is difficult to reconcile with. George is brought up with the idea of moderation as he is taught both by religion and reason, to provide logical explanations to the existence. The negative impression of religion is depicted in the novel through a grim description of the childhood background of both George and Robert. The nature of theology is not attacked by confession, but it highlights the constraints of one’s life to religion.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, it becomes necessary for readers to assess the equal weight of the personal account along with the narrative in order to conclude the truthfulness and supposition that is closer to the authenticity of the story. A sense of resentment and hatred is delicately provoked in the novel which focused on the experience of George Colwan. The sense of resentment declared Robert guilty for the murder of his brother. George is portrayed as an innocent and decent person who suffered from the furies of religious fanaticism of his brother. The novel predicts the negative consequences of religion on an individual when the religious practices commenced go unmonitored. The non-monitoring of religious practices demonstrate the irritant behavior of Robert.

Title: Analyzing Stories

Claudia Rankine is a poet and an essayist. She is famous for her novel, Citizen: An American Lyric. This novel was published on October 2014. Her novel was a tribute to Martin who was shot dead by George Zimmerman without any reason just because he was African Black. Her novel provides the reader with an insight into the problems faced by the African-American community. To describe all the insults and discrimination Black people face daily she used the word micro-aggression. Being a member of the African-American community Rankine refuses to remain silent about the mistreatments each colored individual face. Her novel citizen is a clear example of how fierce she is in expressing her thoughts in this stereotypical society.

Rankine’s novel helps the reader in understanding different vulnerabilities, and pain that occurs in the everyday life of a colored person. Her words serve as a catalyst for the people who suffered a lot like writers, women and other people from the black community, to raise voice against racism and discrimination while incorporating their real-life experiences of citizenship in comparison with “white individuals”.

Rankine in her novel took a very stylistic approach that directly appeals tragedy, and piteousness in multiple ways by using certain images that are disturbing in order to get the reader’s attention emotionally, and visually towards the issue. She aims to point out the grey area that is remained unaddressed although the whole concept of racism revolves around this grey area. Typically, we all are aware of this grey area as it lies in our subconscious mind but still deny to accept it. Rankine took advantage of this by playing on the parts in which the reader is not aware of the grey area while mentioning all obvious facts about the grey area that reader knows (Hersi). Rankine plays with readers’ subconscious mind by forcing them to address their emotions by putting them directly in the situation using the micro-aggressions. She describes the grey area as an area that consists of black and white people. This helped critics, writers, and readers to think about the larger picture of the issues and explore racism. Claudia's novel addressed bio-political issues and environmental injustice. She used the term “othered” in context to white society and how it influenced negatively to the Black people. She discussed that most of the white people are privileged and lives in the main of the city with having less exposure of pollutant and toxins while black people live in the outskirts of the city thereby exposed to all the toxins (Hersi). Furthermore, she used the term “wasting” of the body that helps in understanding the health issues including both mentally and physically that the African American community face on a daily basis. Being “othered” in every field of life negatively impacts the health of the black people as they had to fight this racism and inequality every day. Her writing in citizens is crafted carefully with each word bearing a considerable amount of weight even the title she used means a lot like the word “citizen” itself explains the irony. An irony that Rankine is fully aware of as being a part of the African American community she knows what it takes to survive in all the criticism and discrimination.

The word “citizen” is defined as an inhabitant of any specific town or city or a place where a person is born and possess basic rights. However, white people mostly are the ones that possess these basic rights while the black community is considered merely an inhabitant. Considering Martin’s case in which the whole novel is based, he may have been given a benefit of doubt if he had been white and would be alive today yet he was shot brutally just because his skin was not light at the age seventeen. The contrasting aspect of the word citizen is beautifully presented by Claudia as she considers Martin just an inhabitant who had no access to the rights that a legal citizen has that is white people as they are more privileged in any field of life.

Moving on towards the term racism, it can be described as discrimination against someone because of their ethnicity and color by perceiving one own self as superior. Racism is a very vast term and therefore it affects everyone differently. Rankine uses a combination of various writing styles to explain to the reader about this issue. In order to grasp reader attention her opening lines were simple like on her novel’s very first page the first line was “When you are alone and too tired even to turn on any of your devices, you let yourself linger in a past stacked among your pillows”. In this simple yet complex sentence, she immediately grasps the reader’s attention. She tried to connect with the reader by using a phrase like “when you are too tired” yet making them think about their past and present as well. Due to her choice of words at first glance, any reader would be “wrong-footed”. She carefully puts the reader in a position that they have experienced already. While closely examining Claudia’s words it can be seen that she wanted the reader to assure that, “it’s not just you stacked among your pillows” but it’s your past. This makes the reader start making connections of their experiences and every page of the novel.

Due to Rankine’s ability to camouflage a complex sentence to appear simple helps the reader in understanding her perspective. She also used images to further provide clarity so that the reader understands her ideas. For instance, at one point in the novel, she mentioned about her experience with the therapist. She was in contact with her therapist but they both have never seen each other before. So when they both met the therapist was a bit confused as she sees an African American in her office. She reacted as if the writer (Claudia) was some vermin on her property who had been warned before to “Get away from [her] house” (Rankine 18). This whole scenario was followed by an image of a wounded animal with a human face instead of its own face named as “little girl”. At first, the reader might think about the purpose of this image being used in this tense scenario and will be “wrong-footed” even in the second attempt but while analyzing the image in depth the readers would be able to draw conclusion. As animals do not possess the ability to speak and children also in their early childhood tend to struggle in using words to express themselves so in the particular situation mentioned above a grown woman of different race also needs validation from others. At this point, Rankine without camouflaging her words openly explained the reader about the biasedness’ of society towards black people just because of the color of their skin. Here again, Rankine is successful in slipping the idea of grey area in the readers’ sub-consciousness (Adams).

Rankine’s basic purpose was not only to highlight the issues that the African American community face but to educate the reader as well by addressing the problems in our society. As the novel proceeds, Rankine used more images that are disturbing and ambiguous yet meaningful to depicts and express her mixed feelings like sadness and anger. Another example of the images she used in her text is an image of a white wall with words that were repeated again and again. These words were “I Feel Most Colored When I Am Thrown Against a Sharp White Background” over and over again (Rankine 53). This particular image is of great importance although it is untitled yet it still is very powerful in conveying a message. Rankine used the image to explain that everyone has a certain tolerance level more specifically the black community who faced all the discrimination on daily basis has reached the point where they are tired of being neglected and being bullied. The image also sheds light on the issues colored community face. The repetition of words in the image is paradox of being seen and not being seen. The words like “seen” in the image mean invisible and overly visible. In context to the novel, these words on the image explain that most of the time the black community is neglected and are not given their basic rights as a citizen yet they are overly visible when it comes to violence, discrimination, and racism.

To convey her message and feelings Rankine does not need to be blunt although at some times she was direct about some issues yet still her silent assertions speak itself. This analysis is evident as in her novel she mentioned three dates with one line. They were “November 23, 2012, / In Memory of Jordan Russell Davis”, “February 15, 2014, / The Justice System”, “August 9, 2014, / In Memory of Michael Brown”. In these three lines, she summed up her entire novel. As her novel was a tribute to Trayvon Martin's case in which a seventeen-year-old “black” boy was shot dead by a neighborhood watchman who was a volunteer although the boy was unarmed. Rankine also used an image of a torn hoodie. This image is overwhelming as it depicts tension, anger, and sadness at the same time. In the second line Rankine directly pointed out the failure of the justice system and the failure of all the amendments to correct the system. She used her poetic abilities as well as her excellent writing skills to spread her message and awareness about the problems in the current justice system and how black people are living a miserable life. She succeeded in conveying her frustration, anger, and sadness to the reader while providing an in-depth understanding of inequalities between different races prevailing in society.

Analyzing the different genres in “the cable guy” between comedy vs dark comedy

The “Cable guy” is a satirical black comedy thriller, which is filmed by Ben Stiller and stirring by Matthew Broderick and Jim Carrey. It portrays a lot of different feelings and craziness emotions, which brings out the traits of each character in the film. The feelings of crazy in the film give the audience a mixture of different genre. Therefore, the two genres identified are comedy and dark comedy, which are shown consistently throughout the film. This paper therefore, analyzes the different genres comedy vs dark comedy used in the film. It discusses how the main character started to bring comedy into the film, it discusses dark comedy in the film especially what happened at the end of the film and also provides details how both genres created the message to the audience.

Comedy is usually based on discomfort and anxiety but in Cable Guy, it is used to create laughter out of terror and psychosis. Chad Michael Murray is one of the main characters and therefore, he plays critical role in bringing out the comedy as genre in the film. In the film, Chip Douglas brings out comedy through the use of satire and being hilarious. Douglas tries to establish friendship with his customers by offering free cable channel at no cost. But when Steve rejects Chip’s frequent needs for companionship, Chips started to warn Steven that the cable guy is very dangerous, going to an extent of warning his entire family and the authority. This is out of the way and can only be managed by a psycho’s talker. The desperation showed by Douglas to get Steven friendship is hilarious and satirical, which brings out the comedy genre of the film. In it is hilarious for Chip Douglas to arrive home late and tiptoe when Steven is still in the shower. Therefore, the need to have a friend made Chip Douglas very crazy and psycho; he could do everything to gets attention of his customer Steven.

It is vivid that at the end of the film, Chip Douglas managed to join the family of his customer and potential friend Steven. Mathew Broderick known as Steven in the film, allowed Chip to intrude in his life causing the separation with his girlfriend. Chips played tricks on Steven (customer) girls and almost got the girl killed. He disconnected the cable and then tricked the girl to make connection and therefore, this almost killed her. The fact that Chip tricks the customer’s girl to an extent of almost killed her highlights the genre of dark comedy. The act almost turned fatal and this therefore, introduces the genre of dark comedy in the film.

However, comedy and dark comedy genres as illustrated in the film are used to portray the message of desperation in the film. It is clear Chip was very desperate for friendship or companionship and could do what it takes to get the attention for the purpose of making friendship. It is therefore, shows how careless parents allow their own kid to be raised and left alone in front of a TV screen and how it drives them psycho in the future. Ancient Greek Medea in 2019 on Halloween in New Orleans, Louisiana

Introduction

‘Medea’ is a story of love, betrayal, oppression, rebellion, and revenge experienced by a woman of strong emotions. She loves her husband body and soul, but cannot get the same in response. Despite being considered wise in her society, she is compelled to do much unexpected things that position her as a negative character at the end of the story. She shocks the readers with her unimaginable acts, and leaves an impact of uncertainty on even the most sacred and trusted relationships among human beings. ‘Medea’ is an undaunted initiative by the writer against the literary traditions of that time, presenting an unpredictable protagonist who commits the unwanted crimes just out of rage, jealousy, and revengefulness.

Discussion

Medea is the wife of Jason, and she has left her homeland to marry him. She has been presented in the story as a disturbed woman who is heart-broken due to his husband’s betrayal. She has two sons with Jason when he gets inclined to another woman, Glauce. Jason is on the verge of marrying Glauce who is the daughter of the ruler of Corinth. Jason is aware of the mental and psychological condition of her wife. Cleon, the father of Glauce, doubts Medea that she may harm her daughter. Therefore, he wants to banish her for good. However, she requests for relief and is granted a one-day stay in the kingdom. She later has a dialogue with her husband and reminds her of whatever she has done for him. Jason assures her that he opted for marrying Creon’s daughter only for the sake of power and that he is not in love with her. Jason offers her gifts but she refuses to take them. Aegeus is the ruler of Athens. He visits Corinth and assures Medea that she will be safe in Athens. Medea, exploding in passion and revenge, kills Creon’s daughter secretly (Mastronarde). When Glauce tries to put on the gifts given by Medea, she catches fire and she reduces to ashes immediately. Her father, Creon, also dies in an attempt to save Glauce. Medea takes her children to the residence, and kills them. Later, she flees to Athens and starts a new life. Jason has her vision to be riding in the chariot of the sun where she curses him to have an evil fate, as he was the reason behind her dark crimes.

The story is a revolutionary piece of art in the ancient Greek literature. It shocked all readers of the story as well as the viewers of its theatrical rendering. Euripides, the writer of the story, has tried to present the worst consequences of suppressing women and depriving them of their basic human rights. The writer also wants to show how far a person can go to get his or her catharsis done if subjected to social injustice or emotional torture. People should not take the play as a rhetoric, instead it is based on possible outcomes of the acts of injustice prevailing ubiquitously in societies. Medea suffers the hardships of exile, hatred of people, and loss of her family only because of the selfishness of her husband. The story asserts that gods are also in favor of Medea because her actions are doomed to be a justice done by her on behalf of nature.

Conclusion

The story details the emotional and psychological sufferings of the protagonist. She endures a lot in the form of betrayal, loss of family, and exile out of all people’s hatred. She is wrong based on moral principles. However, she is supported by the laws of nature, which “give the devil his due” mercilessly.

Q.2 Discuss the characteristics of the raven called Moses, and what Orwell is saying about organized religion. Is this a biased opinion? Quote words that support your opinion.

Answer no 2:

In George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, Moses, the raven was the character who represented organized religion and hence named Moses. Characteristics because of which Raven was named Moses are, he was the one who spread the stories of Sugar Candy Mountain that news was about the paradise where the animals are supposed to go after death. Though Moses played a small role in the novel yet it was strong in a sense that it represented organized religion. Moses is being used by Orwell, for exploring how the communists exploited religion by making it a tool with which people used to be oppressed. Moses represented organized religion by promising the animals a future reward. Orwell says in the novel that many times, religion is being used as a tool for oppressing others, as raven and Jones were exploiting rights of animals by using the tool of religion (Risdianto,et,al,2019). Yes, it is a biased opinion as it would be seen that the Russian Orthodox Church under the rule of the Communists suffered a lot that depicts that religion could be used by anyone as a tool, but soon after the revolution in 1917, Bolshevik government declared separation of state and Church for their benefit. All these things show the biases of opinion of Orwell when he quotes “opiate of the masses”.

Animal Rights

People visit circuses and zoos to see animals. They walk in leather shoes and wear leather coats or silk dresses. Use utensils made up of elephant tusks or decorate their homes with ornaments made of animals' bones. In other words, every day, we can see multiple things that are produced from animals' remains but nobody feels sorrow or regret for it. This is because of the mindset of the people that says that animals do not have rights. Various movements and protests have been observed in history for human rights, but no such intense movement has been worked for the rights of other living creatures. There is a mixed perception of the people regarding animal rights. Some people believe that animals acquire rights and humans should respect their rights. Whereas, there are a number of people who argue that animals do not have morality and there is no need for giving them rights. The main purpose of the paper is to analyze the reason that can explain why fundamental rights should be given to animals. It is crucial to understand and learn because every creature on this planet is created by God due to some specific reasons. Therefore, there must be ethics and rights for every living being.

Animal Rights has been a very sensitive and critical issue since 1970. The term was initially coined by Richard D. Ryder and has been a hot subject since then. Since 1970, a huge amount of work has been done on this issue, however, only in the form of writing and in verbal terms ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"8oakihnG","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Scruton)","plainCitation":"(Scruton)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1021,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/GH45UD2R"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/GH45UD2R"],"itemData":{"id":1021,"type":"article-journal","title":"Animal Rights","container-title":"Analysis. The term “Animal Rights” is not confined to a single thing or a single right that needs to be granted to animals. The term also does not encompass any specific kind of animal or any specific species that need to be protected, but generalizes the concept. The idea or the concept of animal rights states that all the animals (or non-human creatures) no matter what they are mammals, reptiles, amphibians or insects, are entitled to have their separate rights, just like humans. Animals are entitled to have the possession of their own existence and their most basic interests.

Discussion

Animals have also been divided on the basis of vertebrates and non-vertebrates. No matter what the basis of classification is, every species, animal or insect contributes something to the ecosystem and adds value to it. There are a number of ways in which it has adapted itself for this purpose. The animals, insects, mammals and the reptiles that have been created, prove to be beneficial for the ecosystem in one way or another. But sadly, we humans as the most superior beings of all, fail to realize the importance of this for our home planet, Earth.Man has been treating animals very poorly for a very long time, without realizing that the poor souls have feelings and emotions, as well. They are living beings and feel pain just like us. The worst part is that they are killed for the purpose of food and clothing. Animal fur and skin are used extensively in the production of clothes, even by high-end brands, and these clothes are sold at very expensive rates.

It is time to understand the fact that just because a human being is larger in size, it does not make them superior to the animals. Animals have been living on this earth since human beings or even before them. It is necessary to share the earth with other living beings. Every year, around seven billion animals die in America,by the hand of mankind. Not only this, more than 90% of these dead animals are killed for food. It shows that man is living as a superior creature avoiding the rights of animals for their own satisfaction. Various scientists believe that humans have evolved from animals. For instance, Charles Darwin proposed that monkeys are the ancestors of humans. It indicates that animals have been living on this earth before us. Then how is it possible that humans are capable of having the rights but animals cannot ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"yC7pweL0","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Yount)","plainCitation":"(Yount)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1019,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/7B8Q8FQQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/7B8Q8FQQ"],"itemData":{"id":1019,"type":"book","title":"Animal Rights","publisher":"Infobase Publishing","number-of-pages":"337","source":"Google Books","abstract":"Praise for the previous edition: ...an excellent first-stop resource for research on animal rights...well organized, clearly written, and a great starting point for research...Recommended.-Choice...comprehensive...invaluable for reports on a popular current topic.-VOYA... a] very complete research guide that will be most useful at the high school and college level.-American Reference Books AnnualThe treatment of animals has become a controversial issue over the years, with many questioning an animal's fundamental rights. It shows that humankind is getting privilege due to their intelligence and power to think and react according to the situation. Tragically, most people have lost the ability to consider themselves as a part of nature and just consider nature to be an asset to be abused. What is more, they further sloppy the scholarly space with a wide range of fake avocations. The individual man is the main creature equipped for most extreme misuse and encroachment on the privileges of different creatures, and furthermore the one on which lies the greatest duty of securing the existence of different creatures.

Animals are created not only for man’s use and entertainment, but they are an essential part of nature. There is a proper life cycle on which Earth is working and every living being has its value for keeping a balance in the Animal Kingdom. For instance, plants are playing their role by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and giving supply of oxygen on which human beings survive. Just like plants, animals are living on this earth with a purpose. The world is in the balance due to the presence of all living beings. Therefore, it is not possible to kill animals for the betterment or satisfaction of man and expect the same environment in the future. It is totally wrong to consider animals only for human use. Animals have the same reproductive system just like humans and they acquire families. Researches show that animals' parents show care, love, and protection towards their babies and offspring, just like humans. Therefore, it is against ethics to separate an animal family or kill their family members for food, clothing, or any other purpose. The animal should be given rights so they can live in a society with freedom and resources that are necessary for their lifestyle ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"g0yLGjJw","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}Why Animal Rights?\\uc0\\u8221{})","plainCitation":"(“Why Animal Rights?”)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1018,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/T7MNENK2"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/T7MNENK2"],"itemData":{"id":1018,"type":"webpage","title":"Why Animal Rights?","container-title":"PETA","abstract":"Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos.","URL":"https://www.peta.org/about-peta/why-peta/why-animal-rights/","language":"en-US","issued":{"date-parts":[["2016",10,21]]},"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",12,16]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“Why Animal Rights?”).

One of the main reasons for denying human rights is prejudice conducted by a human being. Humans have made laws and regulations for themselves. They understand what is good or bad and right or wrong through their own rules and regulation. However, animals are unable to develop such laws, which become part of the argument by the people who are against animal rights. They believe that animals do inhuman activities and show unethical behavior therefore, they should not get rights. However, researches show that animal behavior might be against human nature but it is systematic in its own way. For instance, cows only eat plants and do not give harm to humans or any other animal for hunger. Similarly, animal kills other animals for food, but do not attack without reason. This behavior of animals indicates that they follow rules of nature which are more important to keep Earth balanced. On the other hand, humans acquire rules and regulations, still, they act against it. Wars, conflicts, hate based on race and religions are some of the examples that indicate that humankind also goes against ethical behavior and spreads violence. Therefore, prejudice is the element that makes humans reject animals' rights that they expect to have for themselves.

Some of them think that as animals are not humans, and have been created for the purposed of entertainment and use of humans, they should be utilized in the maximum possible manner. The other side of the argument reveals that no matter if animals are humans or not, they also deserve to live their life independently and deserve to have the same rights just like any other living being. One of the most prominent advocates of this school of thought is Peter Singer. Peter Albert David Singer is a well-known moral philosopher and a big supporter of utilitarianism from Australia. He is a specialist in applied ethics and addresses the issues from a utilitarian point of view. Singer is especially famous for his work and views that are presented in his most famous book "Animal Liberation", published in 1975. Out of the multiple articles published by Singer, on the topics of ethics, morality, and philosophy, one of the articles that got much fame and popularity is the one penned down by the philosopher by the title "All Animals Are Equal" in 2008. He argues that all animals should be given equal rights and should be respected in the same manner as humans are. Singer argues that equal rights are a concept not based on equality, but actually based upon equal consideration ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"yC7pweL0","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Yount)","plainCitation":"(Yount)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1019,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/7B8Q8FQQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/7B8Q8FQQ"],"itemData":{"id":1019,"type":"book","title":"Animal Rights","publisher":"Infobase Publishing","number-of-pages":"337","source":"Google Books","abstract":"Praise for the previous edition: ...an excellent first-stop resource for research on animal rights...well organized, clearly written, and a great starting point for research...Recommended.-Choice...comprehensive...invaluable for reports on a popular current topic.-VOYA... a] very complete research guide that will be most useful at the high school and college level.-American Reference Books AnnualThe treatment of animals has become a controversial issue over the years, with many questioning an animal's fundamental rights. Carl Cohan, another professor of philosophy at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, Michigan also argues about the rights of the animals. He mainly focuses on experimenting and testing of various products on the animals. Multiple authors and philosophers argued that Carl Cohen has provided much too “kind” words in favor of the animals, but they prove to be very harsh for humans. Cohen seems to advocate the rights of the animals but looks like he is shunning or denying the rights of the humans. His explanation about animal rights highlights all the key facts that indicate why animal rights are neglected ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"8oakihnG","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Scruton)","plainCitation":"(Scruton)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1021,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/GH45UD2R"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/rVaVAHaF/items/GH45UD2R"],"itemData":{"id":1021,"type":"article-journal","title":"Animal Rights","container-title":"Analysis. For instance, Hitler used the dead bodies of Jews for medical testing and for various other experiments. Humans call this act as brutal, violent, and against human rights. On the other hand, hundreds of animals are used all around the world for medical testing and experiments. If the use of the human body was against morality and rights of the people, then why is the body of an innocent animal considered with the same perception? It is important to improve the medication and produce more useful medicine but the morality of animals should still be considered.

Animals acquire emotions just like a human, therefore, they should be treated as insane. People ignore the morality and rights of the animals based on the mindset that animals do not behave insanely like a human. It is correct to some extent but, at the same time, animals show behavior familiar to humans. They feel sorrow, fear, anger, and pain just like a human. The way humans feel pain when any of the body parts get hurt, animals also show pain when humans treat them with brutality. Pets like dogs and cats show emotional attachment to their owners which indicates that animals do have feelings. If animals acquire feelings and are able to show their emotions then it is their right to live with the freedom that is without the fear of death at the hands of mankind. Man has no right to kill animals just for fun or sports, such as hunting. If man cannot stop using animals for medical experiments then at least a method should be introduced which can ensure the least pain inflicted upon animals. This is because it is their fundamental right to enjoy their life with virtue.

Man is made by God who can eat both vegetable and animals. It is not possible to make all man vegetarians. However, it is important to improve the living standards of animals. For instance, if a man has the right to live, however, he or she wants and can eat anything, hence; the same concept applies for animals. Animals that are kept in circuses and zoos just for enjoyment purposes is against morality. They are not objects of entertainment. Wildlife is as important for the natural environment as trees. Issues like climate change indicating the importance of plants on the earth. Similarly, animals have their own importance that should not be neglected. Keeping animals in cages must be illegal. In addition, wild animals should not be kept in cages aspets. There are animals that can live with humans, happily, such as, dogs, cats, and birds, however, keeping wild animals like lions, tigers, and foxes is against animals’ rights. These animals are created for living in a wild environment not in the houses as a status symbol.

Another reason behind the negligence of animal rights is the argument that people believe that animals do not share responsibility, therefore, are not eligible for morality or rights. This argument is wrong, as every species has its own responsibility for themselves just like humans do. Human responsibility is to improve the living standard by following the laws, rituals, and norms of society. Economic behavior and socio behavior make them able to realize whether they are fulfilling their responsibility or not. However, these responsibilities are made for self-interests. People do not perform any responsibility to give advantage to animals, trees or any living being. Therefore, they cannot expect animals to fulfill any responsibility that is beneficial for humans. Animals have their own way of life which they follow. They live with their family and species without interfering in others' life. If an animal is not causing violence or destruction in society then humans claim that animals have no responsibility is incorrect.

Conclusion

Animal rights have always been a topic of debate for a long time. Experts, scholars, philosophers, sociologists and even psychologists have been debating over the issue and have presented their arguments. Both the sides, i.e., speaking in favor of animal rights and speaking against animal rights, have always given multiple and strong arguments to support their point of view. People also are the main creatures fit for boundless misuse and cold-bloodedness to different creatures, for the sake of their own privileges - right to soothe their needs and now even extravagances. Animals are created not only for man’s use as they are an essential part of nature. There is a proper life cycle on which Earth is working and every living being has its value for keeping a balance. Peter Singer, a great philosopher and one of the most noted utilitarianist, is also one of the biggest advocates of animal rights. He has strong arguments that animals should be given equal rights just like human beings but not on the basis of equal comparison. Carl Cohen is also a big advocate of animal rights. He suggests that chemicals should not be tested on animals as it inflicts pain on them and hurts them in the same manner just like it hurts humans. There is a big need that humans start accepting responsibility for their actions and think of repairing the damage that has been caused by them. People should start thinking selflessly and consider the other living being sharing the planet with them as living things, as well. They have the same rights and feelings as well, just like we do. They feel pain and have a right to live just like humans do. The sooner humans realize this, the better.
